February 26, 2021 Sanford, Florida On this day, the death of Trayvon Martin made nationwide news and sparked what would be known as the Black Lives Matter Movement. He was murdered by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, who shot Trayvon Martin as he made his way home from a convenient store. Zimmerman confronted Trayvon Martin and an argument ensued - Zimmer would later claim the shooting was out of self-defense.

In the subsequent years, there were many other protests as a response to cases of police brutality and anti-Black violence. The cases of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Missouri both occurred in 2014 and involved the deaths of unarmed Black men at the hands of police officers.

The protests were in response to not only the deaths that were seen as racially motivated and preventable, but also in response to prosecutors not bringing charges against officers.
One of the most prominent cases followed in 2020 with the death of George Floyd, where a police officer was eventually charged with murder. The Black Live Matter protests following the George Floyd case captured national and even global headlines while making calls to action from the American justice system.
