Storyboard Text

  • HARSH SUPERVISION
  • GET BACK TO WORK
  • POOR PAY
  • I'm only giving you this one shilling because I have to, okay?
  • DANGEROUS
  • Johnny, get down! we don't want you to end up like Rob.
  • If kids did not do what they were asked, or if they took a break, supervisors would often beat them to get them to get back to work.
  • LONG HOURS
  • I'm so tired. we had to work 14 hours yesterday!
  • Children only got paid 1 shilling a week for very long hours. Whereas men got paid 10-15 shillings, and women 5 shillings. Factory owners usually sought after children because they could pay them less for long hours.
  • AWFUL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Hot. Very hot.
  • And dirty. Let me shower!
  • On long conveyor belts or other textile machines, children had to run them and risk losing any limbs. They were also very poor, making it so they could not afford shoes to protect their feet from dirty floors.
  • UNHEALTHY LIVING SPACES
  • A normal work day for a little kid older than 5 was often 12-14 hours. They were very sought after because they obeyed orders without any objection. Even though they worked 6 days a week, they only got paid 1 shilling.
  • Can't a kid catch a break?
  • Windows and doors were always locked, making the temperature in factories commonly 80 degrees. In addition, factories were cramped and filthy. Workers got very little pay for very hard work.
  • Kids would have to come home from hard hours of work to a small, cramped apartment filled with other families. Kids were very unsafe in their high crime neighborhoods, and they often got very sick because diseases spread faster when people are closer together.
  • *cough cough*
