- Newton's first law states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an unequal force. Since there is no unbalanced force acting on the ball it will remain at rest until one does.
- Newton's second law states that an object's force is the mass times acceleration. That means if the softball and baseball have the same acceleration and the softball has twice the mass as the baseball, it would have to be thrown with twice the force.
- Newton's third law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The action of the ball hitting the bat has the opposite reaction of the bat vibrating.
