We have a larger population and are more technologically advanced than you surrender!
We have a really good military leader and we have a geological advantage you will lose surrender!
The North had a larger population and was more technologically advanced than the South. The South had geographic advantages and had the best military officers. The North's greatest weakness was that about one-third of the nation's military officers resigned and returned to their homes in the South. The South's weakness was its economy and its transport. The South had few factories to manufacture guns for the military.

Retreat!
Yay, we won!
The North soldiers were cheerful and had parties of civilians following the army in hopes of seeing the rebellion end. The Southerners though were warned about this attack by the people in Greenhow, so the Southern troops were waiting for the North troops to come. In the beginning, it looked like the North was going to win but then South Carolina General Bernard Bee told them to stand like a stone wall and urged his men to "yell like furies." Eventually, the Northern troops became overwhelmed and fled in panic back to Washington. The South continued to have many victories. When the Second Battle of Bull Run happened the North thought they had the advantage but two other Confederate generals were not far away. The South's counterattack of thousands of men against the North caused the North to retreat. This gave the South a clear path to Washington, D.C.

Yay! Us women get to work
The North and the South wanted to make their armies larger, so as more men started to go off to war women had to support their families by running farms and businesses. Other women started to work for the first time in factories or found jobs. Some women became nurses on the battlefield.
