- The first woman in space was Soviet cosmo naut Valentina Tereshkova.Ellen Ochoa was the first American to play music (a flute) in space.Five space agencies cooperated to create the International Space Station (ISS).
- Ellen Ochoa was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 10, 1958. She grew up in La Mesa, California. There, she distinguished herself as a student. Her best subjects were math and science. She also had a love of music. Upon her 1980 graduation from San Diego State University, she seriously considered pursuing a career in flute-playing. However, she ultimately decided to continue her education. She enrolled in Stanford University and focused on science. Ochoa lived with her husband, Coe Fulmer Miles. They had two children. She still played the flute and had a pilot’s license.

- She faced many obstacles on the way to becoming an astronaut, including the rejection of her first application! But she kept on trying—hard. Ochoa got another job and five years later tried again. This time she was accepted and began her training.
