Her way of showing love by protecting them from the one thing that harmed her she loves her husband and her daughter. so she protects them from what she thinks will harm them and that is her troubled past. Due to the trama it caused her she feels it is the only way

- Stella is in her room after Loretta moved away she was thinking about what would happen if she told her that she was passing for white when she says this, ¨None of it belongs to me ¨(Bennett 226). Showing that she regrets lying about her life and believes that she dose not deserve this life due to it being built on a lie. She feels guilt about how she got this life.
