- Two migrant workers, George and Lennie, come to a ranch in California after fleeing their previous job after Lennie accidentally grabbed a woman by her dress.

- CLIMAX
- Slim gave Lennie a puppy, which he is now caring for in the barn. Curley's wife walks in and they start talking. Lennie touches her hair without realizing it because he enjoys soft things. He panics and breaks her neck as she becomes nervous and tells him to stop.

- RISING ACTION
- I don't trust them two, something odd about a little guy like that taken that big guy around.
- Curley, the boss’s son, immediately takes a dislike to Lennie and picks on him. Curley’s wife creates problems by constantly seeking the men's attention. The boys make friends with the ranch hands, especially Candy.

- CONFLICT
- I apologize, George, and I promise not to forget again.
- George and Lennie are good buddies. However, Lennie is developmentally challenged, and the two buddies frequently get into trouble because of his childlike bahavior.

- George specifically told Lennie that if something horrible happened, he should hide by the river. George runs into him there.

- RESOLUTION
- George shoots Lennie before Curley can find him. The men cover it up. The reader feels the sorrow of George having to kill his best friend.
