  • The fire, in this book symbolizes hope. The hope for the boys' rescue and survival.
  • The ocean symbolizes the boys' journey. It is the only thing standing between them and civilization. It is the one obstacle that they want and have to cross in order to get back to their normal lives.
  • Piggy's glasses symbolize civilization. It is the thing that the boys used to start the fire; their hope. Piggy is the only realistic and civilized person in the group and sees the world different from the other boys through his GLASSES.
  • The conch also symbolizes civilization. Mainly rules. The conch is what brought the boys together. The conch is the ultimate object in the book. It has power and only those who hold it have a chance to speak.
  • The Lord of the Flies or the Beast symbolizes everyone's savage side. Basically, it is the beast buried deep inside everyone (which Simon realizes).
