  • Hester is a prisoner now. This scene also shows the readers that the jailer controls her which means he has more power than her. The establishing shot shows the readers about the prison, emphasis Hester’s sin.

  • Hester and her husband - Roger Chillingworth meet again for a long time, but Chillingworth looks like very angry

  • Roger Chillingworth knows Hester very well, and he knows her secret. Chillingworth looks larger than Hester because he controls the situation now, which means Hester have to do anything he tells her and she can’t’ against, meaning she has no power.

  • They have a long conversation, but it is not a good conversation. Hester seems to be very afraid of Chillingworth and she will do anything this man wants.

  • Again, Roger Chillingworth is in control of the situation and Hester has no chance to protest. She is imprisoned both physically and mentally by Chillingworth, who holds her secret and also her husband.
