Storyboard Text

  • During the 1990s, Bolivia allowed its citizens to collect rainwater and purchase commercial water at its base price
  • However….
  • The company “Betchel” purchased all commercial water available to Bolivia and made it illegal to collect rainwater. A necessity had become privatized.
  • This created many effects such as: People having to chose between school for their children and water, many were dehydrated and most citizens would spend half of their daily earning on water
  • The citizens only had one option: Riot.
  • Despite many riots from the citizens, the goverment stood their ground and refused to hand back the Bolivia’s right to water
  • Then, tragedy struck…
  • Due to riots, a 15-year-old boy was gunned down by the police
  • Bolivia was then forced to sign a contract made by the UN to make sure that water is a human right and not a commodity
  • After the incident, life in Bolivia returned back to normal, where the water was unprivitasied and citizens were able to buy and collect rain water again
