When James was 4, his parents were eaten by a rhinoceros, and he was sent to live with his terrible aunts Spiker and Sponge. They were very cruel to him, and he was very lonely because he was never allowed to see anyone else or play with any other children.
I miss my parents.
Do what we say, you filthy creature, or we'll beat you and lock you in the basement!
An old man gave James some magic crocodile tongues, but James dropped them in the garden instead of eating them like he was supposed to. Then a giant peach began to grow at the top of the ancient peach tree. James' aunts charged people admission to come see it.

When James climbed up into the middle of the peach, he found five giant insects that could talk. He was scared at first, but the insects were kind. They had eaten the magic tongues that James had dropped. The peach broke from the branch, and it rolled over Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge, and all the way across the land until it landed in the ocean. He later sees a silkworm in the corner.
After sharks began attacking the peach, James tied the stem to 502 seagulls using threads from the silkworm and the spider. They flew up into the sky. At night, James and the insects saw the cloud-men. The cloud-men were digging clouds and making hailstones, and they threw them at the peach, making holes. Then, James and the insects crashed into a rainbow the cloud-men were making, and they angered the cloud-men even more. They got away, and a rainstorm washed the rainbow paint off of the centipede.
They saw land, and realized they'd arrived in New York City. The people on the ground thought the peach was a bomb. The centipede began to cut the lines to the seagulls so they can slowly sink, but a plane came by and cut all the lines at once. They crashed down onto the needle on top of the Empire State Building. The men who came thought the giant insects were aliens, until James told them they're very nice. The people all ate the peach, leaving just the pit.
The centipede became the head of a boot manufacturer. The earthworm became a spokesperson for a face cream company. The silkworm and the spider started a factory to make nylon rope. The grasshopper played with the symphony. And the ladybug married the fire chief. The peach pit was turned into a monument in Central Park, and James lived inside of it. He had a constant stream of visitors who all wanted to hear his story, and he was never lonely again.
