  • Europe Dark Ages
  • The Church
  • We have the most power!
  • Kings and Lords
  • If I die in battle, my home and land go to the Church!
  • I'm a lord, in charge of the vassals but under the king.
  • We're vasslas off to fight in the Crusades!
  • Life in Europe in the Dark Ages was rough. Between the Crusades, the Black Death, and the government control, many factors led to the slow and painful recovery of Europe.
  • The Crusades and Trade
  • I'm an enemy who was conquered in the Crusades.
  • The social status of Europe during this time began at the top with the Church. The Pope had the most power at this time, ranking over even kings. In addition to this, the Crusades allowed for the Church to gain the money and lands of those lords or kings who died at war.
  • The Black Death
  • I feel so sick!
  • The kings had power below the Church, with lords in charge of smaller estates and knights to defend them called "vassles". This distributed the power below the Church into many different parts, all ultimately under the power of the Pope. If a king or lord would die in the Crusades, their land and money would go to the Church, incresing its power.
  • The End
  • Due to food scarcity and high death rates, the production and distribution was poor. However, even though the Crusades aided to the warring and destruction during this time, they also brought benifits back to Europe such as money and spices. This started to open up culture and trading, leading into Islam's control of many parts of Europe and their increase of trade.
  • We defeated them! Now we can bring our loot back with us!
  • Look! Spices!!!
  • As a result of expanding trade routes, sickness started to spread quicker and further. The Black Death was a major Plague throughout the Dark Ages that had a big impact on the "dark" or the bad things during this time. The Black Death affected about 25 million people in Europe during this time, becoming one of the best known plagues in history.
  • Overall, even though governing structure in Europe was similar to Asia's, The Dark Ages in Europe certainly were dark and miserable.
