  • Gilgamesh, two-thirds god and one-third man, was an arrogant and powerful man who ruled over the city of Uruk. To level his strength, the goddess Aruru created a wild man named Enkidu as his equal.
  • The Journey to the Cedar Forest
  • Enkidu, angered at Gilgamesh's audacity, confronted the king just before he took a bride on her own wedding night. The pair fought viciously, though Enkidu soon realized the king's strength. They embraced, becoming friends out of respectful equality. Soon after, Gilgamesh decided to increase his fame on a journey with Enkidu to a sacred cedar forest to defeat its guardian.
  • The Battle with Humbaba
  • After befriending Enkidu, Gilgamesh had the idea to increase his fame by slaying the guardian of the cedar forest. He consulted the elders, who first objected but eventually suggested he bring Enkidu as a guide, Gilgamesh's mother Ninsun begin him to protect her son.
  • Gilgamesh, Ishtar, and the Bull of Heaven
  • As Gilgamesh and Enkidu made their way to the cedar forest, Gilgamesh was haunted by a dream. Enkidu interpreted it, saying that the sun god would shine down on them and they would kill Humbaba together.

  • As Gilgamesh and Enkidu prepared to fight, Enkidu became scared at the sound of Humbaba's roar. Gilgamesh brought him back, insisting that together, they would prevail. While they fought, Humbaba taunted and threatened Gilgamesh, dangling the idea of his death before him until Enkidu convinced him to cut off the demon's head.
  • Gilgamesh returned to Uruk and cleaned and dressed royally, stunning the goddess Ishtar with his beauty. She begged for his love only to be rejected. In anger, she took the Bull of Heaven from her father and sent it to kill Gilgamesh, only for Enkidu and Gilgamesh to slay it together.
