- William Armstrong, or Doodle, was born with many disabilities. As a toddler, his family thought he wasn't going to live and they even had a coffin prepared for him.
- "I really thought he wouldn't make it. Hes gonna be different you know that, honey?'
- As an infant Doodle went everywhere with his brother. His brother was very embarrassed by him and wanted to get rid of Doodle. His brother was so embarrassed that he set out a plan to teach him how to walk before Doodle went to school.
- How can I get rid of him? Who has a brother that can't even walk that's so embarrassing
- His brother would get frustruated when Doodle couldn't walk and would pick him back up and let him fall over and over until Doodle learned how to walk on his own.
- You cant do anything right Doodle you're so embarrassing!
- A scarlet ibis fell out of a tree near Doodle's house after flying hundreds of miles due to a storm. Doodle felt some sort of attachment to this bird and gave him a proper burial.
- Just run off he won't be able to catch you. You know hes terrified of being left alone so do it!
- One night while Doodle and his brother were practicing walking and swimming vigorously like they have been, a storm approached. His brother had pushed Doodle past his limits this time and he was drained.
- Please don't leave me!
- After Doodle's brother stranded him in the storm, he went back to find Doodle lying by a bush with blood covering him like the scarlet ibis.
