- Clark is having an asthma attack. Asthma is a respiratory condition where a persons bronchi become inflamed, irritated and produce extra mucous making it difficult to breath. The bronchi are the large tubes that connect to your trachea (windpipe) and direct the air you breath into your left and right lungs.
- Im having trouble breathing
- Common triggers for asthma include physical excertion , dust, extreme weather, strong fragrence etc. Clark's asthma was triggered by him breathing quickly during exercise causing dry air to travel into his lungs and irritating his airway
- When Clarks asthma was triggered this caused his airways to become irritated and inflamed making it harder for him to get air in and out. This causes wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breathe.
- *high pitched whistling sound (wheezing)*
- Often people with a history of asthma will carry a rescue inhaler with them incase their asthma is triggered. Inhalers are often albuterol and levalbuterol which are short acting bronchodilators that relax the smooth muscle in your airways and help open them up and allow you to breathe again.
- I need my inhaler!
- As a medic when you get an asthma patient in the back of the squad there are a couple procedures we will do on a mild asthma attack...
- The first thing we will do is hook the patient up to a duo neb treatment (ipratroprium albuterol) which opens up the airway and reduces inflammation. The next thing we do is give solumedrol which reduces the inflammation in the airway as well. The last thing we will do is give IV fluids to break up the extra mucous.
