- One Saturday morning, a family of Nene's went to enjoy a nice day at the beach on their home island of Maui, Hawaii. Their family consisted of twin siblings, Alani and Makani, and their parents, Kaimana and Malia.
- Just as Makani was finishing his sandcastle and after Alani came back from making her lei, their mother came over. She was worried because the sky had gotten darker and that a storm could be coming. So, the family packed up their things and began to leave.
- While they were walking off the beach it began to sprinkle and they started to fly off as fast as they could. However, as Alani took off, the wind blew her lei off and she didn't notice.
- When they arrived at their house they ran inside to escape the storm. Alani was relieved that her parents had told them to leave when they did. The storm was continuing to grow stronger and become more dangerous every second.
- As Malia was putting away the family's things, Kaimana told his children to get some pillows and blankets to put in the safe room just in case this storm became a hurricane and they didn't have time to evacuate. And he knew his family would be safe from The Night Marchers, or the Hukai'po, who might appear on nights such as these.
- The family begin preparing for the long night ahead, but something was bothering Alani. She finally realized that her lei was missing. She went to ask her mother if they could go back and get it. Her mother told her she appreciated how much the lei meant to her, but that it could be replaced and that Alani's safety was more important. Alani was devastated. She and her friend Kioki had spent a long time searching for the perfect flowers to create their matching leis.
