  • Starting Population
  • Adaptation
  • Multiple bear species reside in a forest deep in Alaska. It is fall and multiple organisms are in need of food.
  • Due to overproduction, there is a shortage of food and multiple organisms are competing. Bears are apex predators, meaning they don't need to worry about being eaten, but they need to worry about what they will have left to eat among themselves.

  • Competition & Variation
  • Differential reproduction
  • There are different species of bears residing in the forest and only some hibernate, including the black bear. The bears are competing for limited food and resources. Soon, the black bears will go into hibernation.
  • Non- Hibernating
  • It is now winter. In this environment, it is very difficult to survive in the cold, some bears hibernate in order to survive the long winter.
  • Hibernating
  • Hibernation is beneficial as it slows down the metabolic rate, giving the bear a good chance to survive when there is less food. It also makes the bear use less energy. During hibernation, bears will create an environment that is more comfortable like this one. Bears that are cubs and don't hibernate have a chance of getting killed.

  • It is now spring. During the winter, many species of bears have died off due to the lack of food and not hibernating. This shows that the new generation of bears in the forest will have the adaptation of hibernation in order to survive and will most likely have the traits of the black bear.
