- Two kindsby: amy tan
- jing-mei's dreams were all in America, so she left behind her first husband and two daughters, twin baby girls that were unfortunately dead. she also thought you could be anything you want in america.

- jing-mei's mother wanted her child to be a prodigy. jing-mei did not want to be a prodigy but instead just be herself. her mother tested her on a lot of different things like predicting the weather in diffrent cities.
- you must be a prodigy and play piano.do not disappoint me.
- jing'-mei's mother traded housekeeping with a retired piano teacher named Mr.Chong. jing-mei started piano lessons with Mr.Chong. Jing-mei soon realized that Mr. Chong was deaf so jing-mei started to cheat and not play the right notes.

- jing-mei's mom and Mr.chong conspired together to put jing-mei into a talent show at their church, she played well but then hit her first bad note and then the bad notes kept coming. the crowd started whispering to the other people about her performance

- The day after the talent show they got into an argument about her not wanting to play the piano anymore. by this time her mom had gotten enough money, after the argument the piano was never mentioned again.
- why can't you just like me for who i am, i never asked for any of this.
- you are so ungrateful, go to your room NOW.
- a couple of years after the argument. jing-mei had a tuner fix the piano. she sat down and played the same piece from the show called " pleading child." she noticed the song on the there side which was on the other half called, 'perfectly contented.
