- Mary, you are an indentured servant! You have to work! You can't just sit around all day like you could back in England! If you don't work, the master will get mad at you! Do you understand?
- I know. I am sorry, Elizabeth. I will try to do better. I know the only way I can earn my freedom is to work off my debt. I will get back to work now.
- You are doing very good cleaning. Keep up the good work. I am glad that you are working for me. It will be a shame to let you go.

- Sometimes I am so upset here. I can't help but be jealous of the fact that the plantation owner has everything he wants, and it is all his, but people like me never get anything. I can never own anything, even after my contract expires, just based on the fact that I am a woman! Why? It is so not fair.
