- Jane the midwife finds a girl sleeping in a dung heap.
- Jane calls her Beetle and takes her in so she could work for food.
- Beetle works hard for Jane and learns the "magic" that Jane does when helping women give birth.
- Before Beetle knows it, she is called up to help a woman give birth when Jane cannot.
- Jane sprains her ankle and sends beetle off to get supplies at the fair.
- While leaving the fair, a man mistakes her for a girl named Alyce and so she decides to take on the name.
- In the village, she tries to get people to call her Alyce and continues to find her identity.
- Alyce gets teased by boys but ends up saving one of them, Will, from drowning in a river.
- Alyce is called up to help a woman in labor and when she can't, Jane steps in and does it.
- Alyce runs away and starts to work at an inn when a woman in labor walks in.
- Alyce helps the woman give birth even though she is terrified that she won't be able to.
- Alyce finally finds out who she really is and Jane takes her in again and she becomes the midwife's apprentice.
