- Pope Urban ll declared the Christians in Europe to war against the Muslims so he could claim the Holy Land. The pope offered forgiveness for anyone who took part, this was important for the knights who killed many people in battles, to see the world, freedom, to gain wealth and to get out of the country

- An army of peasants led by Peter the Hermit set of to the Holy land, the Turks massacred them. Then, led by Godfrey of Bouillon an army of knights massacred the Muslims and captured Jerusalem in 1099."The streets ran red with blood"

- King Louis VII of France invaded The holy land but he was killed at Damascus.

- The Muslim ruler Saladin recaptured Jerusalem. The crusaders captured the port of Acre but quarrelled and failed to capture Jerusalem. King Richard I was kidnapped and held ransom until 1194 when the English paid for his release.
- The pope diverted the fourth crusade to unite western and eastern Christians under his authority. With the help of Venice he captured Constantinople in 1204.Christians were fighting Christians.
