  • The Oedipus Myth
  • King Laios and Queen Jocasta of Thebes have a child and learn from an oracle that he would kill his father and marry his mother. The king and queen are horrified at this news and devise a plan to save themselves
  • What do we do?!?!?!
  • Everything is super great, what could go wrong?
  • To try to avoid this fate they give their child to a shepherd with orders to abandon him. The shepherd took pity on the baby and gave him to a childless king and queen of the nearby nation Corinth.
  • I will totally leave your baby to die (not really)
  • I am the oracle, and she is your mom. Also you killed your dad, sorry.
  • When the child, now named Oedipus, grew up he learned about the prophecy and believing that the king and queen of Corinth were his parents he ran away to avoid fate. On his travels, he was stopped by an older man and they fought, Oedipus was victorious and killed the older man.
  • That'll teach you to be rude.
  • He continued on and found a nation known as Thebes, and when he arrived the people welcomed him as their cruel king was slain and the people gave the widowed queen to him as his wife. Oedipus becomes the new king of Thebes and he and the queen have four children together.
  • One day a plague strikes the kingdom so Oedipus goes to the oracle and learns that the man he killed was his father, meaning his wife is his mother. Repulsed by this news the queen kills herself and Oedipus gouged out his eyes.
