  • Thank you for bringing me out to eat! I finally have a break from studying Vygotsky. He was a wonderful theorist, but my brain is fried.
  • Who was he anyway? I don’t think I know anything about him.
  • Yes! He even believes that cognitive development is inseparable from social and cultural contexts. Instead, Vygotsky thinks children are products of their culture.
  • Vygotsky believed mostly in the aspects of culture being significant in learning, language being the root of culture, and individuals learning and developing within their role in their communities.
  • I’m glad he values children’s culture so much. I agree that it heavily influences their cognitive development.
  • That’s so cool. It seems like Vygotsky has a unique sociocultural perspective.
  • Vygotsky also defines cognitive development through aspects of intersubjectivity and guided participation.
  • Well, intersubjectivity is the social nature of cognitive development which describes shared understanding. Guided participation describes how children’s’ cognitive growth is a result from their involvement in structured activities with other individuals who acquire more skills that they do.
  • What do those terms mean within his theory?
  • Oh, that makes sense. How does Vygotsky keep track of a child’s cognitive development?
  • Vygotsky has the thought of children consisting of a Zone of Proximal Development. This describes the differences between what one can do alone or with assistance. This helps identify skills the child acquires and which areas they need help developing with assistance.
  • Actually, there is! Scaffolding is the practice of matching assistance to the learner’s need. This allows the assistance to directly help the child in the specific area of difficulty. Also, private speech and inner speech help the child with their development too. Private speech are comments intended to regulate own behavior. Inner speech are their thoughts!
  • I like how Vygotsky included that some children may have more trouble developing in certain areas. Its wonderful that his theory suggest helping these children with assistance. Are there any specific ways individuals can provide children with this assistance?
  • AHHH! How did we end up here! Talking about Vygotsky distracted me from where we were going!
  • I have absolutely no clue.
