  • By 1789, on the eve of the French revolution, the estimated population of Saint Domingue, (now known as Haiti) was 556,000 and included roughly 500,000 African slaves, 32,000 colonists and 24,000 Affranchis 
  • Treatment of slaves
  • 1791: Numerous slaves heard rumours that the King of France had freed them. Many were inspired by the French Revolution and decided to fight back for their freedom.
  • Just like the French did in their Revolution!
  • The King of France has freed us!!!We can finally go against our "owners."
  • By 1791, numerous enslaved people and mulattoes were fighting separately for their own agendas. Numerous revolts began, growing in numbers and frequency of the revolts. Toussaint Louverture led the first revolt.

  • 1794 Febraury. France issues a decree freening all slaves.

  • 1794: Louverture turns on the Spanish, fighting for the French as they believed the French were going to free slaves and as the Spanish ideals were different.

  • 1795-1798:The British send more forces to Saint Domingue but are defeated. Numerous forces are plagued with disease, with nearly 3/5 men sent died.
  • 1799-1800: War ensues between Louverture in the North and Rigaurd in the south. Louverture is victorious and rules over Saint Domingue
