  • General Yijing had sent a spy to see how many British troops there were. The spy had come back and said that there were 300 troops when actually the British had 1200 troops. They then had a contest to see who could write the best victory announcement. The Chinese were very unprepared and suffered several mishaps before the attack began.
  • The order was given for a general advance towards Ningpo. The civilians living along the route were afraid that the troops would eat all their crops and animals. So they ran away, taking their possessions and animals. The result was that the troops had nothing to eat. They threatened to go home if they were not properly fed. They were dissuaded from this, but they were not happy troops.

  • Most of the baggage and guns were carries by hired civilians. However, many of them disappeared before they reached the base.
  • Instead of using guns the Chinese threw monkeys with fireworks at the British hoping to destroy their ship. It didn't work.
  • The Chinese also decided to use spears and knives to fight. Which also didn't work.
  • When the Chinese troops approached the main gate of the city, they saw to their surprise that it was open. Their commander decided that this must mean the British had fled. So the men were ordered to rush through the open gate, which they did. But it was a trap. As they went through the gate, mines exploded all around them and the British soldiers were waiting to catch them as they tried to escape.
