  • It is unknown who will be the lottery winner. After every head of household has picked a slip of paper Mr. Summers tells them to look at their paper to see who is the lottery winner. The women and children begin to ask who it is and speculate as to who has the paper with the pencil mark. When Tessie realizes it is her husband Bill she starts stating that it is unfair and that he was not given enough time to pick the paper he wanted.
  • Mr. Summers questions Tessie and Bill as to the members of their household and determines that Bill is the head of the family and head of the household. He then has the villagers return 5 pieces of paper into the Black box, one of which has the pencil mark on it. Mr. Summers then has Tessie, Bill, Davy, Nancy and Bill, Jr. pick a piece of paper. One of the kids states "I hope it's not Nancy." It is then revealed that Tessie picked the paper with the pencil mark and is the lottery winner.
  • Tessie tries to convince the villagers and Mr. Summers that the lottery is not fair. There are several villagers that talk about other villages no longer holding the lottery in their villages. The villagers do not listen and start picking up stones to throw at Tessie. One child even hands Davy a stone to throw at his mother. Tessie begs and pleads that it is not fair. In the end a rock is throw that hits Tessie in the head and she falls and the villagers descend on her.Tessie tries to convince the villagers and Mr. Summers that the lottery is not fair.
