  • Ralph and Piggy find a conch shell after the plane accident and use it to call for the other lads. Ralph is chosen as the group's leader after an assembly is held. The guys set up the rules, create shelters, and try to keep a signal fire burning
  • CLIMAX
  • As more time passes, tensions begin to arise among Jack and Ralph because Jack wants to take charge of the group and be the leader. Jack will eventually gather his own band of hunters and begin to question Ralph's leadership once this happens.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Fear of an unknown "beast" on the island causes tension among the guys. They begin to suspect one another and argue amongst themselves as their anxiety levels rise. The guys are certain that a monster is hiding in the jungle, so they set out to find it. They resort to cruelty and violence because they are scared of the beast.
  • RESOLUTION
  • During a wild nighttime rite, the boys, who are scared, mistake Simon for the feared "beast." Simon comes out of the jungle and tries to talk to the other boys. He has found out the truth about the claimed beast and tried to tell the others. But because they are so scared, they surround and beating him.
  • Jack and the hunters turn on Ralph and begin to hunt him. Ralph must flee and hide or he will be killed. In their attempt to flush Ralph out, the boys set the jungle on fire.
  • Ralph runs to the beach to escape Jack. There, he encounters a British Naval Officer. As he attempts to tell him what has happened, he breaks down into tears. When the other boys arrive, they also begin to sob.
