Storyboard Text

  • Presenting Your Majesty, Queen Alexandra of Denmark!
  • Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps
  • We, the Royal nurses of QARANC, hereby pledge our allegiance to the Queen and dedicate ourselves to the White Cross mission.
  • Sub Cruce Candida
  • Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) was established in 1902, and Her Majesty served as President of the organization until her death in 1925.
  • QARANC Training Army Nursing Service
  • After being designated a Corps of the Army, the QAIMNS was renamed Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC).
  • Due to her Danish origin, Queen Alexandra used the Order of Dannebrog as inspiration for the QARANC badge. The motto of the Corps was Sub Cruce Candida, which meant “Under the White Cross.”
  • At the beginning of WWI in 1914, there were fewer than 300 nurses in the QARANC. The eligibility criteria for QARANC nurses was restricted to single women of good social standing between the ages of 25 and 35 and a three-year training at a board-approved hospital in the UK.
  • QARANC nurses served in the Mediterranean, Flanders, the Balkans, the Middle East, and onboard hospital ships.
  • The nurses were formally trained, yet faced challenges during the war. The advancements of warfare introduced new injuries caused by weapons such as shrapnel, tanks, flame throwers, and gas attacks.
