  • When the father set out, Macari', saw the little boy at the bottom of the water. The second time little Macari'n saw tho other little boy at the bottom of the water was at midday, when he crawled to the door of the hut again and leaned out and looked below. This time the little boy at the bottom of the water favored macari'n with a smile. Macari'n had smiled first and now he took the other's smile as an answer to his own. His mother then called him because the second broth of guanbana leaves was finally ready

  • At sunset the man was tired. His back hurt. But he walked along feeling the coins at the bottom of his pocket, making them tink against one another, guessing from the touch which was a copper real, ten centavos, which one peseta, Fine...today he'd had luck: the rich man had driven by the dock to pick up his merchandise from New York. Then the worker who'd lent him his cart for the whole afternoon because
  • Tomorrow's another day.
  • The third time that little Macari'n saw the other little boy at the bottom of the water was at sunset, a little before his father came home. This time Macari'n started smiling before he peered over, aand was suprised to see that the other little boy had also been smiling down below. Again he waved his small hand and again the other one answered him. Then Macari'n felt a sudden warmth and an inexpressible love for the other little boy, and he went to look for him.
