WHO: James Madison President of the United States SIGNIFICANCE: Served as president, and declared war on Great Britain on June 18th, 1812. Was run out of the capital by British attacks INTERESTING FACT #1: Madison was forced to flee the White House as the British aimed to attack the capital. The White House burned down. INTERESTING FACT #2: Before the White House was destroyed, Madison's wife, Dolly Madison, saved key government documents as well as a portrait of George Washington.
