  • During1519 to 1521, Conquistador, Hernan Cortez, with a few hundred men set sail to Mexico from Spain and took the route from Veracruz, on the eastern coast of Mexico, to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan because he wanted their gold and treasures which he heard of.

  • He sailed with 11 ships, 580 soldiers, 100 sailors, some horses and cannons.

  • They first arrived at Tabasco, where they were gifted with a lot of presents and one of those presents was a woman named Dona Marina who could interpret languages so Cortez would now be able to understand the Aztecs and Indians and so would they. They then set of to Tenochtitlan.

  • At their arrival in Tenochtitlan, they met the King of the Aztec Empire, Montezuma, and they both bowed to each other as Montezuma welcomed the Spaniards to Tenochtitlan and he also gave them presents.
  • About a week after, Cortes captured Montezuma after hearing small groups of Spaniards were dead and that that the Aztecs wanted to fight the Spanish men. 
  • However, Montezuma thought Cortes was their God, Quetzalcoatl since he arrived on his birthday and on the date 1519 which they set for the return of their God and Montezuma gave up all of his treasures and gold of his Kingdom to Cortes because he had to obey his God thinking his God was Cortes.
