  • In the beginning of the novel Kino's infant son is bitten by a scorpion. However, the family is too poor to pay for medical care. Therefore, Kino takes his canoe out to the estuary to search for a pearl. This shows his devotion and love for Coyotito.
  • Once, Kino finds the pearl he begins to brag about all the things he will be able to purchase with the money from its sale.
  • When numerous people try to attack and steal the pearl from Kino, he retaliates against them, murdering a man. Even his wife tried to steal the pearl and Kino beat her.
  • When their home is burned and they are forced to hide from the community, the family becomes distrustful of others. Even on the mountain when they are being tracked, Kino goes to great odds to attack the trackers.
  • In the end, his negative attributes end up killing his son. Had he gotten rid of the pearl or sold it in town then his home, canoe, and son would not have perished.
