Someday, your son will be a great ruler. Oh wait- or he'll become a spiritual leader if he is exposed to suffering.
An Announcement
My newborn son, Siddhartha Gautama shall not know death, old age and sickness, for he is to be a great ruler.
Trapped In A Too Perfect Life
Are you coming dear?
What's it like out there?
After Siddartha was born, a wise Brahmin came and told Queen Maya and King Suddhodana that Siddartha would become a great leader, either in the spiritual world or in a kingdom.
Seeing Suffering
Why did you have to die?
King Suddhodana was determined to make his son a great ruler and didn't want him to be a spiritual leader. So, he made an announcement that his son shall never leave the castle and have old and sick people leave the grounds.
Living As An Ascetic
I'm so cold and hungry!
😭
Mara's daughters, Discontent, Delight, and Desire, no matter how convincing they may seem, I shall resist them!
Siddartha often wondered what life was like beyond the palace walls, although he liked his easy life. He married at the age of 16 to Yashodhara. He then had a son named Rahula at age 29.
The Awakened One
Finally able to travel at 29, Siddartha sees that people are suffering from old age, sickness, and death. Wanting to solve the mystery of suffering, he decides to venture away from home.
Oh, old age!
Owww, ohhh!!!
Meditating
Cutting his hair and removing his jewels,Siddartha became an ascetic. After a while, he realized that denying the body's needs was not the solution to suffering. He needed to create a lifestyle that was in between his old life and living as an ascetic. Determined to find the answer, he left to create his own path.
After thoroughly meditating throughout the night under the Bohdi Tree, Siddartha saw how to reach true happiness and peace. He decided to share his discovery with the rest of the world and even shared it with the ascetics.
