  • Rolihlala Mandela, better known as Nelson Mandela, was born in South Africa on 18 July 1918. He grew up during the time of apartheid and strongly fought to end the system. However, he was viewed a dangerous man by the white government, and was arrested and given a life sentence in 1962.
  • Multi-racial Elections
  • Mandela was held in prison for 27 years where he became an international symbol of resistance to apartheid, and sparked many protests in both South Africa and around the world. He was finally released from prison in 1991 due to pressure on the government.
  • End of the Apartheid Era
  • Mandela continued to campaign for the end of apartheid through talks with the de Klerk (South African president and leader of the National Party). The talks earned both Mandela and de Klerk the Nobel Peace Prize in December 1993.
  • Mandela's Legacy
  • In April 1994, South Africa held its first multi-racial parliamentary elections in history. 22 million South Africans turned out to cast ballots. Nelson Mandela was elected as South Africa’s first black president, with de Klerk serving as his first deputy.
  • Under Mandela’s presidency, a new constitution was negotiated, the civil service was restructured, and the era of apartheid had ended. A Truth and Reconciliation Commission was also set up to investigate and heal the wrongs of the past.
  • No More Apartheid
  • Mandela stepped down from politics in 1999 and sadly, passed away in 2013 at the age of 95. He has left a lasting legacy on the world and will always be remembered as one of the most inspirational and freedom-fighting figures in modern history.
