  • Tough Choices when Preparing for a Baby
  • ANTI-VACCINE!
  • Hey Babe. Welcome home! How was work?
  • It was okay! How was your day?
  • John, guess what I read on Facebook about vaccinations?
  • What, dear?
  • There are a lot of toxic side effects that harm our baby.
  • Hmmm? I don't like the sound of that.
  • Don't you think we should talk to the doctor about all this?
  • She is probably going to push vaccinations no matter what. I also read on a mom blog that the preservatives in the injections can cause cancer!
  • Okay. You're right. I will keep reading on the internet and then we can ask Dr. Smith at our next appointment.
  • Mary, I don't want to do anything that could hurt our baby, but don't you think she has our best interest at heart?
  • THREE DAYS LATER...

  • Hi there! We are here for our appointment with Dr. Smith!
  • Okay! Go ahead and take a seat! She will be ready to see you shortly!
  • Sure.
  • Okay! John, why don't you stay here for now.
  • Mary? You can come on back now.
  • My name is Susan. I am the nurse that works with Dr. Smith.
  • Let's start by getting your weight and I will check your vital signs.
  • Okay!
  • Great! Go ahead step down and I will have you sit on the table. Any pain or are you feeling any contractions?
  • No pain. I have been feeling a little cramping every once and a while.
  • That's great. Well, you're 39 wks and 3 days today so cramping is normal.Take some deep breaths for me!
  • Everything looks and sounds great! Dr. Smith will be right in!
  • Great! Thank you!
  • Hi, Mary! Good to see you today. How are you feeling?
  • Hi, Dr. Smith. I am okay, but I have a lot of concerns about the care of my baby when we are in the hospital.
  • Ohhhh... like what?
  • I have been reading so much this last week about the harm vaccines cause to babies!!!
  • I feel this is something that is really important to you and I have some extra time today. Would you like to discuss your concerns in my office?
  • Sure, but I don't feel like I want my baby to have any vaccines no matter what you say.
  • You have a right to make decisions in your labor. I have a duty to do no harm so I would never encourage something that was unsafe. The safety of you and your baby are my top priority.
  • Can I have my husband come in for this discussion?
  • Thank you. Nice to meet you as well.
  • Hello, John! It's nice to meet you. Your wife was asking about vaccines. It is important that you are here.
  • Well, I heard the baby will get the Hepatitis B vaccine. Neither Mary or I have Hep B so we don't think it is necessary.
  • So, how about we start with what you know about newborn medications?
  • I read that the worst is the Vitamin K injection which can cause Leukemia because of the preservatives.
  • Thank you. My wife and I have read a lot about harm vaccines cause, but what is the harm in not giving the newborn medications to our baby?
  • I just don't want anything unnatural being put into my baby.
  • The Vitamin K injection is preservative free so I do not believe that is credible information. About the Hepatitis B, here is a Vaccination information Sheet I would like you to read.
  • Hmmm. I guess we have a lot to think about.
  • Well, I believe the vitamin K and erythromycin are the most important. The first, helps baby clot her blood. The second, prevents infections that cause blindness.
  • I think that's a great idea.
  • I just don't want to feel pressured.
  • Some expectant parents find that having a written birth plan is helpful. Maybe you two can continue the conversation when you make yours.
  • Okay. I understand. Thank you.
  • Alright. I just want to have this baby already.
  • Just know that labor is unpredictable and a lot can change. We may have to have continued conversations about the best labor plan throughout your labor. I will see you at your next appointment or when you come to deliver your baby!
  • Mary continues reading Anti-Vaccine blog posts...
  • Dear, I don't think this is helpful. I think your mind is already made up to not vaccinate, so let's just write our birth plan and stop worrying.
  • Okay. You're right.
  • See. Don't you feel better? I think we're ready for baby now.
  • Yes. We are ready.
  • To be continued...
