The brilliant farm fields of Nebraska was the scene where the main characters, Jim and Antonia, met and created everlasting memories.
Jim and Antonia meet for the first time. This is where their life long friendship starts.
As they were out playing in the countryside Antonia let out a scream. She came across a large snake, one that you might see at a circus. Jim then killed the snake to protect her, but himself as well.
Pavel and Peter were groomsman who had to drive, by sledge, the bride and groom from the wedding reception to the next town. A pack of wolves gave chase and from then on, the Russians were known for throwing the bride and groom to the wolves.
Jim remembers the buggy ride being where he and Antonia were extremely happy. The sky turned gray, the wind picked up, and they tried not to freeze on the way home.
Life for an immigrant in Nebraska in the 1800's was hard. Winter was even more depressing for the poor. Antonia's father couldn't withstand missing his home country and the hard life they had. He killed himself out in the barn one night.
