Storyboard Text

  • Prologue: A priest with the people asks Oedipus for help against the plague, Kreon, his brother-in-law reports that it is because of the mysterious death of the previous King Laios
  • Speak to them all, It is for them I suffer, more than for myself(Lines 95-96)
  • Then I will tell you what I heard at Delphi. In plain words The god commands us to expel from the land of ThebesAn old defilement we are sheltering. 100 It is a deathly thing, beyond cure;We must not let it feed upon us longer(Lines 97-102)
  • Now twice you have spat out infamy. You'll pay for it!(Lines 144-145).
  • Scene 1, Oedipus is mad that Teiresias, a blind prophet from Apollo, says he is the one who killed King Laios
  • I say you are the murderer whom you seek(lines 143).
  • He (Kreon) would not commit himself to such a charge, But he has brought in that damnable soothsayer To tell his story(Lines 180-181).
  • Scene 2 After Oedipus accused Kreon of planning to murder him, he then had an existential crisis but Iokaste, his wife, the queen, assured him he's fine
  • Set your mind at rest.If it is a question of soothsayers, I tell youThat you will find no man whose craft gives knowledge of the unknowable(lines 182-184).
  • Scene 3 Oedipus learns that his father is dead, that he was adopted through Polybos messenger, and Iokaste angrily left due to Oedipus persistence to learn of his origins
  • Groundless, am I not my fathers' son?(Line 100)
  • Polybos was not your father(Line 101).
  • Oedipus, damned in his birth, in his marriage damned, Damned in the blood he shed with his own hand(Lines 72-73).
  • Scene 4 Oedipus learns through the Sheperd, he was King Laios son, and Iokaste's son as well, accidentally fulfilling the prophecy
  • For if you are what this man says you are, No man living is more wretched than Oedipus(Lines 66-67).
  • Exodus Iokaste has hung herself due to shock of what she has done, Oedipus blinded himself due to grief, and is now being exiled by Kreon for his crimes
  • No! Do not take them from me!(Line 287).
  • Come now, and leave your children(Line 286).
  • Think no longer that you are in command here, but rather think how, when you were, you served your own destruction(Lines 288-291).
