- The "tracking serum" is actually a serum that was developed by Jeanine Matthews to hypnotize Dauntless soldiers and attack Abnegation. That night, Tris is awakened by all the Dauntless Soldiers that must be under the influence of the serum. Tris however is not affected by the serum because she is divergent but she follows them anyway, pretending to be in the same state. The Dauntless soldiers take guns and walk towards a train heading to Abnegation in unison.
- Sneaking In
- While on the train, Tris finds Tobias and realizes that he is also Divergent therefore unaffected by the serum. Tobias and Tris both make a run for it but Tris gets shot and they both get captured. They get taken to Jeanine and she decides to execute Tris and use Tobias to test out new serums to make sure they affect Divergents. The next thing she knows, Tris is in a tank slowly filling with water like in one of her fear simulations. Meanwhile, Dauntless members are killing Abnegation members and especially leaders in cold blood.
- Four Faces his Fear
- On the brink of giving up, Tris's Mother, Natalie breaks the tank and they both make a run for it, however, they are being chased by Dauntless soldiers and Natalie sacrifices herself in order to draw the soldiers away from her daughter. Tris manages to run to the safehouse where her father is and other Abnegation members like Tobias's father. Tris and some people from Abnegation head for the Dauntless headquarters to try and stop the simulation.
- Let's catch a train
- While sneaking towards the Dauntless headquarters, they find Peter. He has murderous tendencies so he doesn't need a serum to kill people. Therefore he is awake, guarding the headquarters. Tris shoots him and he agrees to take her to the control room and in return Peter goes with them. One the way to the control room Tris's father sacrifices himself the same way his wife did.
- When Tris reaches the control room, she finds that Tobias is there under the control of the new serum that affects Divergents guarding the control room. The serum makes him think that Tris is his enemy. Rather than shooting Tobias, Tris hands him her own gun. Finally, Tobias manages to wake up from the simulation.
- Together, Tris and Tobias shut down the simulation controlling the rest of Dauntless. When Tobais sees that his father came with Tris and Caleb, he becomes upset and angry. He finally confronts him for being an abusive father and Tris backs him up. Afterward. the group flees town on a train.
