  • As he was leaving, Paul saw some roses and decided to pick one to give to Beauty. Suddenly, his horse neighed and he heard a loud, deep roar. The Beast behind him scolded Paul for stealing one of his roses after he showed him so much kindness. The Beast told Paul that he deserved death, but he had one month to be with his family first. There was only one way for the Beast to forgive him:
  • one of Paul's daughters had to come to live with the Beast, and she had to come willingly. If Paul did not come back either alone or with one of his daughters, the Beast would come find him. Paul promised he would come back. After this, the Beast told Paul to stay another night then leave in the morning on a new horse, since his had run away at the sight of the Beast.
  • Paul returned home in the morning and explained what happened.. They were very upset; the boys said they would fight the Beast, and the girls blamed Beauty because she asked for the rose. Accepting the blame, Beauty decided to take her father's place with the Beast so he could keep his promise.
  • Once the month was over, Paul and Beauty went to the Beast's castle. The Beast had a feast set out for them and asked Beauty if she was willing to stay. Although scared, Beauty said yes. The Beast told Paul not to expect to return to the castle again, but gave him whole chests full of riches. Although he didn't want to, Paul left Beauty at the castle the next day. Much of Beauty's time at the castle
  • was spent alone, but she was happy to explore the castle and liked all the little things the Beast provided to keep her busy. She did not see the Beast himself much except for at dinner each night, when Beast told her not to be tricked by appearances and asked her if she would marry him. Every night, Beauty said no, and the Beast walked away sad. Beauty didn't fully trust
  • the Beast, but became less afraid of him. One day, Beauty asked the Beast if she could leave the castle for two months because she missed her family, and she promised to come back after. Although he was hurt, the Beast said yes, but told Beauty if she did not come back right after two months, he would die of a broken heart. So Beauty went home.
