Storyboard Text

  • The first crusades started in 1095 when the Seljuk Turks took over the Holy Land. This prevented Christians from entering the place during their pilgrims. Through this, the Byzantine Empire and the Pope worked together to get rid of them.In 1099, the Crusades drove out the Turks and claimed Jerusalem.
  • Onwards to the Holy Land, for we shall claim it ourselves!
  • In 1146, the city of Edessa was conquered by the Turks, prompting the second crusade to commence the following year.However, the crusade failed due to Saint Benard (the leader of the crusade) unable to control the whole situation.
  • Sorry, this isn't my area of expertise at all!
  • Saladin's capture of Jerusalem in 1187 prompted the third crusade to start. This one however was lead by Richard the Lionheart who fought against Saladin for many years. Although the crusade wasn't able to gain Jerusalem again, they had the permission to send pilgrims to the city once again.
  • We are finally able to send pilgrims to the Holy Land once again!
  • In 1202, Pope Innocent III lead the fourth crusade in hopes of gaining the Holy Land back once again. However, the crusade was sidetracked and evantually failed as they instead invaded Constantinople.
  • Looks like we have the wrong city.
  • In 1217, Pope Innocent III wanted to have another try in claiming the Holy Land. The crusade was unsuccessful once again due to their army not being victorious against the sultan and being forced to surrender.
  • After the fifth crusade came the sixth and the seventh, both being unsuccessful in claiming the Holy Land. The eight and final one was launched in 1270. However, the crusade was short-lived due to King Louis dying shortly before arriving on the shores of Africa.
