  • In 1096, Pope Urban II called on Christians to fight a religious war to gain control of Jerusalem and 'The Holy Land.' This war will be known as the First Crusade.
  • The Cause of the Second Crusade
  • The very next year, the first Crusaders set out from Europe, and three years later, they finally gained control over Jerusalem, as in June of the last year, they gained Antioch, in Syria.
  • The Second Crusade
  • Most Crusaders returned home, but some stayed and built the 4 Crusader Kingdoms in Palestine, Syria, and current Lebanon and Turkey.
  • The Result of the Second Crusade
  • When the Muslims banded together and fought back against the Crusader Kingdoms, they captured Edessa in 1144. Edessa was the capital of the northern crusader kingdom.
  • Christians began the Second Crusade, and a German army was defeated in Anatolia, and in 1148, the French army of about 50,000 was defeated at Damascus by Muslims from Edessa.
  • This crusade failed after the French returned home after Damascus. There is another Crusade after this, but in entirely different context.
