  • The Odyssey Book IX: Odysseus and the Cyclops
  • By: Piper McKerlie
  • Phaeacian Palace
  • ... And then we ended up on the land of the Lotus-Eaters. And finally after sailing through another stormy night we reached the island of the Cyclops.
  • Odysseus tells the Phaeacians about his wanderings from Troy.
  • Cyclops?!
  • Odysseus and his troops came across an uninhibited island just off the mainland filled with herds of wild goats.
  • The Cyclops are a rough, uncivilized, and immoral one-eyed race who dwell in the caverns of mountains. They do nothing to cultivate their land or society as they have complete faith in the gods.
  • Land of the Cyclops
  • Feast on wine and meat men! And take nine sheep per ship.
  • I will travel with my ship and its men to the mainland to discover if these Cyclops are savage and violent, or hospitable to strangers. The rest of you wait here.
  • Baaahhh!
  • Polyphemos' Cave
  • There is no sign of the Cyclops here- he must be herding sheep. I must wait and see if he will give me presents!
  • Odysseus, I think we should just take some cheeses and sheep now and then get out of here quickly!
  • Strangers who are you? Where do you come from?
  • Polyphemos the Cyclops, son of Poseidon, returns back to his cave and heaves in place a huge door stop blocking the exit to the cave.
  • We are the Achaians coming from Troy. We've lost our way but Zeus willed us here. As strangers and guests we are hoping for gifts.
  • Polyphemos became hostile and savagely devoured two of Odysseus' men, spilling blood and brains all over the floor. He kept Odysseus and his men prisoner to eat later.
  • I could kill the Cyclops so easily right now, but then we will all die in here because he is the only one strong enough to move the boulder.
  • The next morning Polyphemos prepared two more men for dinner and then led his flock out of the cave, quickly replacing the boulder behind him.
  • Meanwhile...
  • The Cyclops needs to be punished!
  • Odysseus looked to Athene for guidance when he noticed a large piece of olive wood that Polyphemos had in the cave.
  • Odysseus and four of his men hoisted the olive wood into the fire to harden the tip so that they could stab Polyphemos in the eye while he slept.
