- Hey guys! I heard that we have a quiz later about the Discovery of the periodic table. Maybe we should study right now.
- Well, in 1969, the german merchant and alchemist Hennig Brand attempted to create the philosophers stone. In 1680, Robert Boyle discovered phosphorus.
- In 1809, 47 elements were discovered, and in 1863 John Newlands divided the 56 elements into 11 groups based on their characteristics. In 1869 Dmitri Mandeleev developed the periodic table.
- In 1886, Antoine Bequerel first discovered radioactivity. Sir William Ramsay and Lord Rayleigh discovered noble Gases in 1984. In 1897 J.J. Thomson first discovered electrons.
- In 1900 Bequerel discovered that electrons and beta particles are the same thing. In 1903, Rutherford announced that radioactivity is caused by the breakdown of atoms.
- In 1911, Rutherford and Hans Greiger discovered that electrons orbit the nucleus of an atom. In 1913, Bohr discovered that electrons move around a nucleus in discrete energy called orbitals.
- In 1914 Rutherford first identified protons in the atomic nucleus.
- In1932 James Chadwick first discovered neutrons, and isotopes were identified.
- In 1945 Glenn Seaborg identified lanthanides and actinides(atomic number 92), which are usually placed below the periodic table.
