- This was a big movement because it encouraged other states to make prison quality better and make asylums for the mentally ill rather than have them treated terribly and not getting the help they need. Also some states make a law that there won't be any cruel punishment
- The conditions in prison back then were terrible. People who were mentally ill were put in prisons because they were mentally ill. They were treated terribly and couldn't get the help they need. People were also in jail for things like minor theft or debt. They couldn't even make money to help pay off their debt while in prison. This need to change because it was unfair and cruel.
- The prison reform was about a women named Dorothy Dix who helped make conditions for prison better and made life for the mentally ill better.she did this in late 1800's and early 1900's
- The woman who did this was Dorothea Dix. She was an advocate for the mentally ill and for her whole life and career she made prison conditions and helped the mentally ill till she died. She was born in April 4th 1802 and died in July 17 18887
