Storyboard Text

  • Mexicans people go to the back of the hotel!
  • Katie joins her dad in walking into a motel to get room to sleep for the night. When they enter, they are greeted with racism. They are told to get a room in the back of the hotel. In addition to this, they were given dirty looks.
  • I am not Mexican, we can take one of the front rooms!
  • On Katie's first day of school, everybody greeted her with the same dirty look as she's experienced before. Everybody was having fun and making new friends, but nobody wanted to be friends with Katie. Some people examined Katie as they've never seen somebody like her.
  • When she is walking with Lynn, she is amazed by how nice everyone looks. Everybody is giving her the same dirty look but she is used to it and thinks its traditional in the south. She thinks everybody respects and loves her, although they are judging her based on her skin.
  • Katie thought it was normal in the south to be greeted like this. When the racist lady told them to get a room in the back of the hotel, Katie thinks she is mistaken. Katie informs the lady that they are not mexican and they can take a room towards the front of the hotel.
  • When Katie enters the classroom, she thinks everybody is in the same situation as her. She examines the class and sees people dancing in their groups and wonders why she wasn't invited. She gets distracted by when her teacher compliments her sister, saying her sister was very smart.
  • When Katie is walking on the street, she thinks everybody is amazed by her presence. She thinks everybody is as happy as she was and that face she was given is a way of expressing happiness in the south. Her sister was smiling at her, knowing what she sees is much different than reality.
