  • Hi! I'm Mandy and I have a special missiion to complete but I need Your help. I'm standing in front of the time machine.#160; We are going to time travel using this machine#160; and calculate how tall are famous monuments using trigonometric functions. Are You ready?
  • Wow! It is Ishtar Gate, one of the most marvellous ancient monuments covered with glazed brikcs built around 557 BC. But how tall is it?
  • Now we are in Mexico. in front of Pyramid of the Sun one of Aztecs temples. Let's check its height!
  • England? Of course, we are in front of stonehenge- prehistoric and very mistic monument.
  • I was teleported precisely 20 meters away from this monument and I look up at an angle of 61 degrees. Look at the triangle above. What we can use? Exactly, we can write that tan41 = H/ 20. H =#160; 20* tan41. Then we need to check what tan41, after that H = 17. Ishtar Gate is 17 meters high.
  • Colosseum ia an#160;amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy#160;built in around 80 AD.
  • The base of this Pyramid is square-shaped and its sides are approximately 220 meters. Half of the diameter of the base is 110√2. Walls of this Pyramid are laid back from the top at 67 degrees. Using this data we can use one of the trigonometric functions. Cos67 = h / 110√2. I hope You also found out that Aztecs temple is 66 meters tall.
  • Last but not least, the Leaning Tower of Piza. Do You know why is it leaning?#160;The leaning was caused by the uneven settling of the building's foundations in the soft ground.
  • The sun shines at an angle of 37 degrees and the shadow end 12 meters away from the highest of the stones. Look at the picture above and try to find a way to determine the height of the marked stone. You are right, we must use tg37 = H/ 12. 12 times tg37 equals 9. The stone is 9 meters heigh.
  • I'm 20 meters away from this amazing monument and I look up at an angle of 67 degrees. What trigonometric function we are going to use? Tg67? Yes! So, tg67 = H/ 20. Did You manage to do this? Perfect! Colosseum is 48 meters tall.#160;
  • Look at the picture once again. Angle a, which is created by the leaning of this tower, is 85 degrees. I am standing 4,5 meters away from the Tower. We must use cos85 = 4,5/ H, H*cos85 = 4,5 and finally H= 4,5/ cos 85. You also found out that the Tower of Piza is 55 meters tall? Perfect! Thank You for Your help, You are a really good mathematician.
