The short story 'Civil Peace'
by Chinua Achebe
After a civil war (Biafran war) in the1970s in Nigeria:
The town of Enugu is poverty struck. Jonathan is happy that he,
his wife and three of his four children survived the war.
And luckily, his house and his bicycle are still intact.
Jonathan and his family work hard to earn their living,
selling akara balls and palm wine. After he has waited in queues
for 5 days, Jonathan finally receives 20 pounds ex gratia money
(or as it is called: egg-rasher) as a reward for
turning in the rebel money after the war.
At night, thieves come knocking on the family's door.
They want 100 pounds and threaten the family with weapons.
Jonathan pledges that he only has the 20 pounds ex gratia money but the thieves think he is a rich man.
Eventually, the thieves settle on the 20 pounds "egg-rasher"
and leave the family without doing them any harm.
The next day, everything goes on as usual.
Jonathan is just happy that everyone is alive and safe.
He and his family get ready for another day of work.
I don't have 100 pounds, I only have a 20-pound egg-rasher.
Give us 100 pound and we go commot. Orderwise we de
come for inside ...
OK. Make you open dis window and bring the twenty pound.

Police-o! Thieves_o!
Neighbours-o!
Wake up!

I count it as nothing.

Did I depend on it las week?
I say, let it go where everything
else has gone. Nothing puzzles God.
