  • The Declaration of Independence is a written document announcing the United States as a separate and independent nation from Great Britain. This document also states the theory of natural rights and the purpose of government.
  • The first principle of the Declaration of Independence is Popular sovereignty. Political power is vested in and derived from the people. this means that the people consent to have the government lead them.
  • The second principle, social contract says Government has the power to protect natural rights, but the people can change their government if it fails to do so. “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
  • The third principle of the declaration of independence talks about individual and natural rights. This includes, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.It is also said that these rights are inalienable.
