- Santiago became a shepherd, because he wanted to travel the world instead of becoming a priest. He has gone on many routes, and has seen many people, Including a girl that he loves. He is on his way to the village to see her and sell his wool. He has been having a reoccuring dream about finding treasure in the pyramid.
- While in a town, he discovers a gypsy. He decides to see her, so he can ask about his dream. The gypsy tells him to go to egypt and give a tenth of the treasure to her. He was fine with that answer because he didn't really have to promise her. Later he comes across an old man named Melchizedek who would help for some of his sheep.
- He believes him and gives some of his sheeps away. Melchizedek turns out to be a king, so he gives a breastplate with beautiful stones. He tells the plan to go to egypt and tells advice that will help him later on. Santiago then makes his way to egypt with the thing he had gotten.
- He enters a city in arabian area at a stop. During his stay he goes to a bar. At the bar he meets a boy his age that speaks spanish. Since he understands the boy he tells him his journey trust him to go with him. While in the center he sees a sword that interest him. The boy then steals his money.
- Santiago is now penniless and realizes he should trust just anyone. Santiago then studies the people and realizes that even though there is many different languages in the town they are all able to understand each and communicate correctly. He has to earn money to go back on his journey to egypt.
- Santiago finds a jewelry store that he thinks he can make some money from. He cleans all of the windows and a few customers come in. He asks the owner for food and the owner gets him some. He tells the owner he will work for money to get to egypt. The owner does want to pay for egypt but for him to go back home. Santiago continues working just to get money.
