  • They really go hand in hand. Soil is a reservoir for water and precipitation fills the pores, or air spaces, between soil particles.
  • Let's talk a little about soil and water conservation.
  • It just means where water is collected and stored.
  • Yes, and other forms of H2O such as snow, hail and sleet.
  • What's a reservoir?
  • Can we go outside and talk about this? Then we can study the stream and wetlands.
  • Precipitation is rain, right?
  • Yes, drinkable and free of harmful organisms and chemicals. The water that flows here is not potable. Neither is salt water, like the oceans, which account for over 95 % of the water on earth.
  • It's important that all of you understand that although 70% of the earth is covered with water, not all of it is potable.
  • Potable?
  • Why are we here? I was picturing a nice walk by the pretty stream.
  • Only 3%
  • More like you wanted?
  • We'd better take care of it then!
  • Yes! This water is so much cleaner and it doesn't stink.
  • So how much water is fresh water?
  • For real!
  • That's right. Lucky for us most farmers are really smart and practice good land management by keeping the soil covered with plants, leaving plant material in the ground after harvesting and being aware of the slope of the land.
  • Although soil and water are closely aligned, water is not always good for soil. Water causes the most erosion to soil and can wash away whole fields and cause huge gullies.
  • I know what gullies are,,,, they're like big ruts washed out by water. My uncle has them in his field sometimes.
  • Darn! I don't have my fishing pole!
  • Slope means how steep a hillside is?
  • You understand a lot! You are absolutely correct. Let's go see if we can see any trout in the stream!
  • So I guess it's really up to us to take care of both our water and land.
  • Right-o
